Trial Access to Sharpe Online Reference through November 6

M.E. Sharpe, a publisher of books and journals in the social sciences and humanities, is currently offering trial access to 18 major reference titles through its online portal Sharpe Online Reference. The titles cover a variety of topics in U.S. and global history and culture. All titles can be browsed and searched (individually or across all titles). The site also includes an image gallery, an archive of primary source documents, useful web links, and teacher resources. The titles in the collection are as follows:

Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys Now Available Online

Standard & Poor's Industry Surveys is a leading source of professional industry analysis used by investment advisors, corporations, consulting firms, government agencies, and law offices. Over 50 of the largest North American and global industries are covered by the reports available in the database, along with a larger number of sub-industry reviews.

Each report is authored by a Standard & Poor's industry research analyst and includes the following sections:
  • Current Environment
  • Industry Trends
  • How the Industry Operates
  • Key Industry Ratios and Statistics
  • How to Analyze a Company
  • Glossary of Industry Terms
  • Additional Industry Information References
  • Comparative Company Financial Analysis
The database archive currently extends to 2001, although the reports are periodically updated and the majority have been updated this year.

EBSCO's Humanities International Complete Database Now Available

Humanities International Complete provides full text of hundreds of journals, books and other published sources from around the world. Produced by Whitston Publishing, the database includes all data from Humanities International Index (more than 2,200 journals and 2.8 million records) plus unique full-text content, much of which is not found in other databases. The database is especially strong in the subjects of area studies, cultural studies, film studies, history, world languages and literature, philosophy, religion, and women's studies.

Humanities International Complete currently includes:

  • Over 1,020 full-text academic journals (with citations and abstracts for articles in over 600 additional journals)
  • Over 720 full-text books and monographs
  • Over 180 full-text magazines (with citations and abstracts for articles in over 450 additional magazines)

A useful resource for students and faculty interested in all aspects of the humanities, Humanities International Complete will be available to the WPUNJ community throughout the 2010-2011 academic year. EBSCO's Education Research Complete Database Now Available

Education Research Complete is a bibliographic and full-text database covering scholarly research and information relating to all areas of education. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Education Research Complete also covers areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues.

The database currently provides indexing and abstracts for over 2,300 periodicals, including more than 1,800 academic journals, over 440 magazines, and over 40 trade publications. Full-text is available for over 1,300 of these titles. The database also includes full text for more than 550 books and monographs, government and research organization reports, and numerous education-related conference papers. Academic Search Database Goes From "Premier" To "Complete"

The Cheng Library is pleased to announce a major upgrade to its interdisciplinary full-text database from EBSCO. Effective immediately and throughout the 2010-2011 academic year, the WPUNJ community will have access to Academic Search Complete. The database is significantly larger than Academic Search Premier, containing over 2,900 more full-text publications - for a total of over 7,600 titles - and offers broad subject coverage for a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, area studies, biology, chemistry, ethnic and multicultural studies, food science and technology, general science, geography, law, mathematics, music, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, psychology, religion and theology, women's studies, and many other fields.

Academic Search Complete currently includes:
  • Over 7,000 full-text academic journals (with citations and abstracts for over 3,600 additional journals)
  • Over 930 full-text magazines (with citations and abstracts for over 330 additional magazines)
  • Over 370 full-text books and monographs
  • Over 200 full-text trade publications
The database also includes conference papers and proceedings, public domain educational reports and more. While the majority of full-text content dates from 2000 and forward, many publications are available with more extensive full-text backfiles, including 170 publications with backfiles extending beyond 1980. JSTOR Plant Science Offers a Rich Bounty of Plant Information

JSTOR Plant Science, a database providing access to information about plants from around the world, is now available through the Cheng Library. The database contains foundational content vital to plant science - plant type specimens, taxonomic structures, scientific literature, and related materials such as letters, maps, paintings, and drawings. The interface supports searching basic and advanced searching and browsing by plant name (along with family, genus and species names), geography (places collected and distributed), herbarium, and resource type. Currently, the resources in JSTOR Plant Science include:

  • over 210 images of artefacts
  • over 270 books
  • over 1,260 drawings
  • over 15,100 letters and other correspondence
  • over 70 manuscripts
  • over 4,300 paintings
  • over 13,300 photographs
  • over 780 prints
  • over 812,000 plant specimen records with images

...and more. The site also contains a news feed, with updates contributed through a dedicated blog, Twitter accounts, and Flickr accounts. By 2013, the database is expected to grow to over 2.2 million plant specimen records. JSTOR Plant Science provides an interface that supports teaching, including the ability to measure and record plant specimens, share observations and objects with colleagues and classmates, and investigate global plant biodiversity. JSTOR Plant Science is a useful teaching tool for life science, environmental science, and botanical science programs. Students and faculty can create individual "My PLANTS" accounts within JSTOR Plant Science to tag, annotate and save objects, save customized searches, and share tags with other users. Something About the Author is Now Online

Something About the Author is a biographical reference series providing illustrated biographical profiles of children's authors and artists. Published in print since 1971, the series currently comprises over 210 volumes covering over 12,000 individuals, ranging from established award winners to authors and illustrators who are just beginning their careers. Entries typically cover: personal life, career, writings, works in progress, adaptations, and additional sources. Starting with Volume 200 (2009), the Cheng Library has moved from a print to an online subscription to the series. Our online access currently covers more than 750 individuals and provides scanned image reproductions of the pages from the print version of each volume. A new volume is added to the database approximately once every five weeks, with an average of 75 authors per volume, so the database will grow over time. The Cheng Library will continue to make the print copies of Volumes 1 through 199 available in the Curriculum Materials Center.

Improved Access to Education Literature with ProQuest Education Journals

As part of its subscription to ProQuest Central, the Cheng Library is now offering the specialized database ProQuest Education Journals. The database provides indexing to over 820 periodical titles in education, including over 630 scholarly journals, 120 trade publications, and over 50 magazines. Citations and abstracts are available back to 1971 for several titles, and full-text access is available for over 650 titles, with current full-text content provided for over 460 of these. Over 110 of the full-text titles in ProQuest Education Journals are unique to the database. A complete title list is available.

ProQuest Education Journals covers not only the literature on primary, secondary, and higher education but also special education, home schooling, adult education, and hundreds of related topics.

Improved Access to Computing Literature with ProQuest Computing

As part of its subscription to ProQuest Central, the Cheng Library is now offering the specialized database ProQuest Computing. The database provides indexing to over 500 periodical titles, including over 250 trade publications, over 180 scholarly journals, and over 50 magazines. Citations and abstracts are available back to 1971 for several titles, and full-text access is available for over 400 titles, with current full-text content provided for over 200 of these. The database includes product reviews, database design and management, software, hardware, e-commerce, Web site development, intranets and extranets, and technology management. Topics covered in the database include artificial intelligence, games, graphics, networks, programming, security, systems, management, data processing, hardware, information science and information theory, and software.

Trial Access to NewsBank's Access World News: Research Collection Until May 30

The Access World News: Research Collection from NewsBank provides full-text and video content from an extensive number of global and U.S. news sources. Among the source types available in the database are:

  • 3,538 Newspapers
  • 440 Newswires
  • 219 Broadcast Media Transcript Sources
  • 210 Business and Legal Journals
  • 183 Blogs
  • 145 Broadcast Media Video Sources
  • 110 Magazines
  • 58 Web-Based News Sources
  • 55 College and University Newspapers
  • 38 Business and Industry Newsletters


Updated daily, the database currently contains over 200 million articles. Approximately half of the 3,000+ newspaper sources in the database contain archival backfiles extending beyond five years. The interface provides easy-to-use search and browse functionality, including an ability to restrict searches to specific geographical areas, source types, and sources. NewsBank is providing the Cheng Library with trial access to the database from now until May 30. JSTOR E-Journal Archive Gets a Major Upgrade with Addition of the Arts and Sciences VII Collection

The Cheng Library is pleased to announce the addition of JSTOR's Arts and Sciences VII collection to its JSTOR archive of electronic journals. The Arts and Sciences VII collection contains over 180 titles across thirty-five disciplines, including anthropology, archaeology, art and art history, business and economics, Classical studies, health policy, history, language and literature, linguistics, philosophy, political science, sociology, and statistics. The collection builds on the strengths of the three JSTOR journal collections already acquired by the Library, adding over 100 titles not previously available at WPUNJ in any format.

As with the other JSTOR journal collections, the purpose of Arts and Sciences VII is to provide a permanent electronic archive of major journals rather than current issues. For most titles, issues are added to the collection on a regular schedule following a time lag of between one and ten years while current content is often available through other databases. With the addition of the Arts and Sciences VII collection, the Cheng Library's JSTOR archive now includes a total of 527 titles for which new content will be added each year.

Trial Access to Four Full-Text Databases from EBSCO Until March 5

The Cheng Library is offering trial access to four full-text databases on the EBSCOhost search platform from now until March 5. During the trial period, students and faculty will have access to the following databases:

Art and Architecture Complete
Art and Architecture Complete provides full-text coverage of more than 330 periodicals and 215 books. It also offers cover-to-cover indexing and abstracts for nearly 730 academic journals, magazines and trade publications, plus selective coverage for more than 70 additional publications and an image collection of over 64,000 images provided by Picture Desk and others. This database covers a wide variety of pertinent subjects, including antiques, art and art history, interior and landscape design, and much more. [See complete title list]


Education Research Complete
Education Research Complete offers a large collection of full-text education journals covering scholarly research and information relating to all areas of education. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Education Research Complete also covers areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. Political Science Complete
Political Science Complete contains full text for over 400 journals, and indexing and abstracts for more than 2,000 titles, including top-ranked scholarly journals, many of which are unique to the product. The database also features more than 180 full-text reference books and monographs, and over 27,000 full-text conference papers, including those of the International Political Science Association. SocINDEX with Full Text
SocINDEX offers comprehensive coverage of sociology, encompassing all sub-disciplines and closely related areas of study. These include abortion, criminology and criminal justice, demography, ethnic and racial studies, gender studies, marriage and family, political sociology, religion, rural and urban sociology, social development, social psychology, social structure, social work, socio-cultural anthropology, sociological history, sociological research, sociological theory, substance abuse and other addictions, violence and many others. Over 550 Additional Journals Added to SpringerLink E-Journals Collection

The Cheng Library is pleased to announce that our SpringerLink E-Journals Collection has been enhanced with the addition of over 550 new journals, bringing the total collection size to over 1,940 titles. Springer titles cover a wide variety of disciplines, including behavioral sciences, biomedical and life sciences, business and economics, chemistry and materials science, computer science, earth and environmental science, engineering, humanities, social sciences and law, mathematics, medicine, physics and astronomy. The additional journals will provide substantially improved access to published research literature for many programs on campus.
